Why a tiny sketchbook, and why make it myself?

This particular art journaling class was borne from personal experience. When Sara was packing for travel recently, she knew she wanted to do some artwork during her trip. She also knew she wouldn’t have time to do large journal entries. She needed something manageable and small. Perhaps even a teeny tiny journal. (Wink, wink.)

Sara wanted it compact enough to put in her purse or pocket, ensuring she could sketch or paint while she was out and about. Even more so, she only needed a limited number of pages and wanted to preserve minimal weight.

It was important to Sara that this little travel sketchbook was handmade, because this year she made a pact with herself not to buy any new art supplies unless absolutely necessary.

What Sara has learned after using a few of these little cuties, is that they’re not just great for travel, they’re also the perfect proportion for bite-sized art journaling every day.

Benefits of a Tiny Art Journal:

  • It’s the ideal length for creating a group of consecutive small works to inform larger pieces of art.

  • Ten pages makes for a non-intimidating, achievable challenge. What fun to finish an entire sketchbook in a short amount of time!

  • Each small art journal is brief enough that it can stand for a “chapter” in your growth: “For the last ten days, this is where my head was at/ what I was experimenting with/ what I was learning”. Each entry in each book provides a visual record of what you’ve experienced and learned throughout your regular journaling practice.

  • A series of these miniature books makes a charming collection!

  • The petite size makes it a lovely gift, especially if it’s filled with sentiments, sketches, paintings, drawings, or collages you crafted for your favorite person.

In this self-paced, virtual art course, Sara shares her sketchbook-making process, plus provides over twenty narrated videos to help ignite creativity and spark ideas for endless compositions in your art journaling practice.

Why focus on line as the main element for each page?

Paul Klee said, “A drawing is simply a line going for a walk”. Sara says, “Entire compositions are created by moving lines in different ways across the page“.

Lines are esssential in artwork. They are, in fact, one of art’s seven main elements. Though simple, they create remarkable results with limited materials and tools, therefore aligning with the our tiny art journaling goal of ease and portability.

Lines are a beginning point, sparking ideas for the next page, the next book, the next painting, the next collection. They direct the eye across the page, express emotion, communicate movement, energy, and form. They create texture and provide a sense of space. These are all qualities that make works of art interesting.

Plus – Lines are EASY. Zero intimidation factor here.

Sketchbooks and journals are an integral part of Sara’s formal art practice, but for her, they are also a form of mindful self care. The small scale of these pages make finishing a page in a day an achievable and reasonable goal, even when life is super busy.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re experienced in a particular medium or skill. Your journal is your private space where you are free to experiment, make messes, and create with untethered abandon.”

“In my journaling pages, I focus on what’s intriguing me at a particular point in time – the actual moment I’m sitting down to work on a spread. It’s very personal, the way we interpret materials, color, marks, composition, within our own context. The meanings we discover are not going to present the same way to everyone, but, in my journal, what other people think bears no weight. I’m able to create with freedom and to my heart’s content.”

Kind Words…

“Sara is not only a great artist, she is an amazing teacher. Each class carefully lays the foundation for art journaling and then builds from week to week. Sara is kind and motivates in a very positive way. She encouraged me  to use what I learned while tapping into my own creative voice. And, her group approach allowed each person to learn from peers as well.

I’d highly recommend her workshops for those looking to learn more about journaling.”

“I follow you on Instagram and love your artwork! It came at the perfect time for me as I’ve been dealing with the very sudden and unexpected loss of my only brother.  I was looking for a creative outlet and something that was different and new for me as a way of calming my mind.  This was just that! The three-week format was well-organized, thoughtful, and perfectly executed. Each week’s skills and lessons built upon one another and culminated in a final lesson that will keep each of us growing and evolving as journaling artists! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and love of art with us, I can’t wait to continue this journey and hope to take more workshops with you!”

“Thank you for such an inspiring series! I feel like I’ve recovered my sense of playfulness and trust that was missing in my creativity before taking your classes. Hoping for more in the future!”

“Usually doing something new, especially art for a non-practicing artist, can be so stressful. This course was anything but stressful. It was relaxing, calming, and soothing. I have this new found love of art that has been therapeutic in so many ways. I love that I am learning to hone my intuition while also developing art skills. As I tried art on my own prior to class, I was just kinda figuring it out, but that was stressful because I needed more structure to work within. Sara provided exactly that. She gave me enough of a technical foundation to then feel free to explore and express myself creatively. 10/10 would recommend and will be trying again!”
I”‘m finishing up the class and wanted to say it was AWESOME! Seriously one the best workshops I have ever taken. Im so inspired and really enjoyed the mark making and learning from you! I plan to jump in on your monthly inspired.”
