    Details: Black hashmarks were the starting point of this composition, washed over with translucent washes of aquas, blues, and glowing yellow ochre. Interest and texture were built by adding thicker patches of more blue and aqua hues and adding in a shade of sunny tan that suggests sandy beaches. A singular swipe of textured gold picks up shimmery metallic details sprinkled over the composition, and a pattern of gray fine lines create energy in the lower right corner. An unexpected treat of frosting-like pats of thick-bodied paint crawl up the bottom left corner of the painting, like froth on white-capped waves.     24”x30” acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas 2020

    Details: The ground of the painting is an array of hot colors - oranges, pinks, reds, accented by strong black patches and marks. Working to calm the chaotic emotion of the piece, blues were layered over them, then whites, greens, and some lively yellow ochre and soft pinks. Wipe away techniques were used to create texture and depth, and scratching was employed to etch the XOXOXO message and the reverse rainbow arches. A palette knife was used to create icing-like swipes of heavy bodied paint and create lush, sensory-rich swipes of color. The use of subtractive techniques create windows into deeper layers, while the bold additive techniques create a sense that the narrative continues to grow and build outward.   • The Grotto

    Details: Cool, calm Payne’s gray establishes the base for this painting. Soft pink, gentle aqua, and white are layered on top, giving form to the composition. The paints are applied in varying transparencies and thicknesses, allowing for textural richness added by both scratch and wipe-away techniques. Palette knives were used to add heavy patches and marks, and thin, energetic lines were made using pen tips. Several areas of the painting present translucent layers that peek into deeper places, and bright and vibrant green grants a sense of new life and growth.
